The Jacquard Loom

The Jacquard Loom was invented by Joseph M. Jacquard in 1804.   The Jacquard loom automatically controlls the warp and weft threads on a loom by recording patterns of holes in a string of cards.  Warp is the lengthwise threads as the cloth is woven, and weft is the crosswise threads as woven.

Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures woven matelasse bedspreads, throws and coverlets on Jacquard looms.  These looms are similar to those used by Bates Fabrics, which was famous for the quality of their bedspreads.

Employees of [tag]Maine Heritage Weavers[/tag], http://www.mhweavers/ , are former Bates employees who continue the tradition of weaving America's favorite [tag]bedspreads[/tag] as taught to them by their parents and grandparents.

King Candlewick Bedspread

A King Candlewick Bedspread is 120" by 120" in size and is woven in a chenille like cotton yarn, which has a fuzzy pile effect.  The yarn protrudes from all sides of the [tag]bedspread[/tag] and produces a much softer feel.

Matelasse Bedspreads

Matelessa bedspreads have been woven in Lewiston, Maine, for over 150 years.

The famous Bates Fabrics began weaving [tag]matelasse[/tag] bedspreads in the early 1850's in mills located along the Androscoggin River.

Bates Fabrics is no longer around, however the employees at [tag]Maine Heritage Weavers[/tag] were all former employees of Bates. They now weave the Matalesse in the same buildings that house Bates Fabrics and on looms similar to those used 150 years ago.   Matelasse is the French word for fabric with raised, embossed surface designs.

These bedspreads are loomed to be heirloomed.
