Jacquard Loom Woven USA Bedspreads

Jacquard Loom Woven USA Bedspreads are still being woven in former Bates Mill Buildings in Lewiston, Maine.

The Jacquard loom was invented by Joseph M. Jacquard in 1804.   The Jacquard loom automatically controls the warp and weft threads on a loom by recording patterns of holes in a string of cards.  Warp is the lengthwise threads as the cloth is woven, and weft is the crosswise threads as woven.

Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures cotton woven matelasse [tag]bedspreads[/tag], throws and coverlets on [tag]Jacquard[/tag] looms.  These looms are similar to those used by Bates Fabrics and Bates of Maine, which were famous for the quality of their bedspreads.

Former Bates employees who continue the tradition of weaving America's favorite bedspreads as taught to them by their parents and grandparents, are now the first generation of weavers at Maine Heritage Weavers.
