Jacquard Woven Bedspreads

Jacquard woven bedspreads and coverlets such as those woven by the legendary Bates Fabrics Company years ago, are still being woven in the USA at Maine Heritage Weavers in Lewiston, Maine.

Jacquard woven looms produce some of the worlds finest throws, bedspreads and coverlsts. Most bedding woven on Jacquard looms is imported from China, India and Portugal and very few USA companies weave on Jacquard looms.

One company, Maine Heritage Weavers, began over 7 years ago by former Bates employees to continue weaving Jacquard luxury bedspreads and coverlets. They are one of the last companies (probably the only one left) to weave terry loop (candlewick/chenille) bedspreads

The Jacquard loom was invented in 1804 by Joseph M. Jacquard. The Jacquard loom automatically controlls the warp and weft threads on a loom by recording patterns of holes in a string of cards, similar to the way a player piano plays notes. Warp is the lengthwise threads as the cloth is woven, and weft is the crosswise threads as woven.

We proudly carry all of the bedding products of Maine Heritage Weavers. Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures woven vintage matelasse bedspreads such as Abigail Adams and Queen Elizabeth, Heritage and Tuscany. They are woven on looms are similar to those used by Bates Fabrics, which was famous for the quality of their bedspreads.
