Bates Mill Bedspreads: During the early part of the decade of the 1850's workers completed the first of the several Bates Mill buildings in Lewiston, Maine. Constructed along the Androscoggin River to the West and a series of canals to the East that supplied power to the mills as water cascaded through turbines back to the river, thousands of Maine craftsmen and women worked around the clock to provide the now famous lines of Bates Bedspreads to customers from all over the World.
Bates Mill is no longer having closed its doors several years ago. However Maine Heritage Weavers, Inc., has been in business for five years. Staffed by former Bates employees and conducting business out of one of the former Bates Mills, Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures even higher quality bedspreads on looms similiar to those used for nearly a century and a half by Bates Manufacturing Company.
