Martha Washington’s Choice Terry Bedspreads

Martha Washington’s Choice terry bedspreads are great examples of the finest USA woven chenille type (or candlewick) bed coverings still very popular in America and still made in America. Vintage candlewick bedspreads such as Martha Washington’s Choice and American Tradition can be referred to as “chenille”, “hobnail” or “terry loop” style.

This beautiful woven style has a needlework effect that produces a 3-D effect through patterns of French knots, or uncut loops forming a fabric pile. Martha Washington’s Choice bedspread is an example of terry-loop (also known as hobnail, chenille or candlewick) construction. American Tradition is a lighter weight design and more suitable for warmer climates.

Woven terrys are very popular for blankets and other bedding produced by Maine Heritage Weavers, Inc., of Lewiston, Maine. Their website is www.mhweavers.com. Our company, the Bates Mill Store, www.batesmillstore.com has been carrying USA made terry chenille bedspreads for over 50 years, all of which are woven in Lewiston, Maine, USA.

Fabric swatches are available for free at www.batesmillstore.com! Custom sizes are also offered for a minimal additional charge.

Woven Jacquard Vintage Bedspreads and Coverlets

Woven Jacquard vintage bedspreads and coverlets are still being woven in the USA. Jacquard looms produce some of the worlds finest throws, bedspreads and coverlsts. Most bedding woven on Jacquard looms is imported from China, India and Portugal. Very few USA companies still make bedspreads and coverlets, especially using Jacquard looms.

Maine Heritage Weavers, began over 7 years ago by former Bates employees to continue weaving luxurious Jacquard bedspreads and coverlets. Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures woven matelasse bedspreads such as Abigail Adams and Queen Elizabeth on looms similar to those used by Bates Fabrics, which was famous for the quality of their bedspreads.

The Jacquard Loom was invented by Joseph M. Jacquard in 1804. The Jacquard loom automatically controlls the warp and weft threads on a loom by recording patterns of holes in a string of cards, similar to the way a player piano plays notes. Warp is the lengthwise threads as the cloth is woven, and weft is the crosswise threads as woven.

Employees of Maine Heritage Weavers are former Bates employees who continue the tradition of weaving America’s favorite bedspreads as taught to them by their parents and grandparents. Their products are truly loomed to be heirloomed and will last for many years.
